IGB BERLIN - LEIBNIZ INSTITUTE OF FRESHWATER ECOLOGY AND INLAND FISHERIES BERLINSince starting my PhD in September 2021, I have been investigating the effects of the invasive quagga mussel on the water quality of the three large lakes in Berlin, with a strong focus on Lake Müggelsee. In particular, I am interested in the selective filtration behavior of mussels on cyanobacteria, in relation with a strongly temperature-dependent filtration rate. This combination can lead to very interesting dynamics during cynaobacterial blooms in summer heatwave periods. To investigate this, I am conducting a long-term data analysis (20 years) of Lake Müggelsee and attempting to support the resulting findings with laboratory filtration experiments at different temperatures and modeling of the lake and the mussel influence with the PCLake+ ecosystem model with additional data.
